Read here about the dirtiest waters in the world
Lake Karachay (Russia)
According to a report by the Washington, D.C.-based Worldwatch Institute on nuclear waste, Karachay is the most polluted spot on Earth. Since the 1950's, nuclear waste has been seeping into Lake Karachay from the Mayak Nuclear Waste Storage Facility.
Currently the waste threatens to seep into the Arctic Sea, which would spread radiation around the world. The risk of this happening, however, is shrinking as the lake is currently drying up and posing a new problem: Radioactive dust blowing into neighboring towns. The victims of Lake Karachay pollution are everyone on earth.
Current cleanup efforts include covering the dried lake bed with cement to keep the radioactivity from blowing away.

Yumana River (India)
The waters of the Yumana were compared to nectar by Babar, the founder of the Mughal dynasty. It is the site of numerous aquatic religious rituals by devout Hindus. You may recognize it as the river that runs past the Taj Mahal.
Millions of Pilgrims bathe ceremoiously in the river every year, but the Yumana has the highest concentration of raw sewage on earth. The Yumana is a dead river, sustaining no life.
The victims of Yumama pollution are millions of devout Hindus, and everyone who has to live near it.
Current cleanup efforts include the threat of boycott of rituals by religious leaders.

Mississippi River (US)
Despite being in a ‘first world’ country , industrial pollutants and fertilizer runoff from farms into the Missisippi River have created a 12,000 to 15,000 km2 'deadzone' around the Gulf of Mexico which can ealily be viewed from space. In this dead zone, no aquatic life can survive.
The victims of the Mississippi River pollution are fisheries and shrimp farmers.
Current cleanup efforts are minimal. Most of the pollution is from fertilizer, which is unregulated in the us.
(A second option for a US site would be Lake Onondanga: Designated a hazardous waste site by the US Environmental Protection Agency.)

Citarum River (Indonesia)
The Citarum is regarded my many as THE dirtiest river in the world. This is debatable, since there are many different types of water pollution; each more dangerous than others for different reasons.
With it's surface covered in trash, the Citarum is certainly the worst looking. 530 factories, raw sewage, and garbage dumping have polluted the Citarum
Only thirty years ago, the Citarum was a tranquil river lined with rice patties and fisheries. All that is gone, replaced by a new industry: The recycling of trash.
The victims of Citarum River pollution are fisheries, farmers, and everyone who comes in contact with the river in any way.
Currently there are many international organizations dedicated to the cleanup of the Citarum. Thanks to bloggers and good photos, the Citarum is one of the few hyper-polluted rivers that people are even aware of.
Rio Bogota (Colombia)
The Bogota river is a small river beginning in the hills of Bogota. It winds through the city, picking up virtually all the industrial waste and sewage created by the 8 million inhabitants of the city.
By the time the river leaves the city, the water is a black sludge that smells like rotten eggs. The sludge falls over the spectacular waterfall called Salto del Tequendama (a national landmark once present on the ten peso bill), then snakes into the Madgalena River, where much of Colombia's fish crop are contaminated with Cadmium, Mercury, lead, and the untreated sewage of 8 million people.
The victims of Rio Bogota pollution are colombian fish eaters, the neighbors of the river, and Colombia's national pride.
Many online information campaigns are bringing awareness to Colombians over the Rio Bogota situation, and a sewage treatment plant is in the works to end the funneling of raw sewage into the river.

Matanza-Riachuelo (Argentina)
The Matanza Riachuelo River has been polluted by the typical culprits: Industry, sewage and some dumping. What sets this river apart is that it is currently being cleaned up. Civil and Legal pressure have forced the Argentinian government to relocate slums, close down facories, and reform water treatment: But the struggle to clean the Matanza-riachuelo is far from over.
The victims of the Matanza-Riachuelo are the people who live near it. The cleanup effort has also created a new kind of victim: The polluting factories, the largest of which have already been shut down.
